Riverside for Balanced Learning is a D96 parent group formed in 2026 to pursue the following objectives:

  • Transparency

    • D96 publishes clear, consistent, district-wide expectations or guidelines for when, how, and for how long student devices are used during the school day (e.g., remove devices from youngest grades, set time limits like that of Los Angeles).

    • D96 increases transparency for families by giving parents better access to information about their children' s device use and digital activity (e.g., report daily device use to parents of all grades).

    • D96 improves transparency around ed tech and AI decisions (e.g., the selection of digital platforms, evaluation, and monitoring)

  • Safety/Evidence-Based Use of Technology

    • D96 reduces unnecessary student screen time by ensuring school-issued devices are used only for instructional purposes (e.g., block YouTube, remove use of personal devices from brain breaks, recess or rewards).

    • The district incorporates the findings of the growing body of scientific research showing the negative impact of technology on young children by creating clear limits

  • Parent Engagement

    • Establish a formal, ongoing partnership between parents and the district to inform future technology decisions (e.g., form an education technology parent advisory committee)
